Your task is to express typographically a social message, greeting or the like, that is relevant to the campus community at Taylor’s University or society at large.

You may use minor graphical elements or visuals to aid in your message and design. You may use the appropriate colour schemes after getting the black and white version approved. Ensure that the expression occupies the space and is legible and readable for its intended use.

Upon completion of the designed sticker, selected stickers will be used for social platforms Telegram/WhatsApp. Design an attractive, functional, and visually impactful sticker. You may use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for the task.

1. Sketching
The greeting I choose is "Happy Mother's Day". After having some research on the internet, I drew out 5 sketches for the greeting stickers. The elements related to Mother's Day are flowers, ribbons, and love.

After showing all my sketches to Mr Vinod, he advise me to proceed with sketches 3 and 4, while there are still some changes needed when digitizing the sketches. I first tried to digitize sketch 4, however, I can't manage to come out with a satisfactory result. Thus I abandoned sketch 4 and go on with sketch 3.

The flower that I chose was a tulip, pink tulip represents happiness and confidence. Therefore I think the flower helps to represent the wish of all mothers in the world, hoping they can gain happiness and confidence.

However, I had make some mistakes in these works. What I do is just place the letters, it isn't lettering. Thus, I have made some changes to my work based on the feedback from Mr Vinod.

Mr Vinod approved the work above, and I started to add some colours to my work. I found a colour scheme which may be suitable to apply to my work.

FEEDBACK

Week 11:
General Feedback: Avoid too much illustration in the sticker, the letterings should have about 80% of the sticker.

Specific Feedback: Maximize the use of space. Sketch 4 is creative but there's an improvement needed on the space above the word "Happy".

Week 12:
General Feedback: You should design a letterform which forms the shape, that's lettering. Your current work is just fitting the letters in the graphical element. You need to change it.

Specific Feedback: Better not use the existing typefaces, or you need to modify the existing typeface.

Week 13:
General Feedback: Looks better than previous works. But the letters are too plain, only have one tone.

Specific Feedback: Already have a good form, will be better if add some dimensions to the letters.

REFLECTION

Experience - During the process of this task, I have been encountering many difficulties. The first and biggest problem was that I was not able to draw lettering that I was satisfied with, which frustrated me. Because the lines I drew many times with the brush tool were always crooked. The requirement of this assignment is to form a pattern with words, and I made a lot of mistakes in the early stage because I didn't understand it correctly many times. Fortunately, I was able to find the right direction in the end. This assignment was very interesting in general, and I used many things I learned from the previous assignment and also deepened my understanding of Adobe illustrator again.

Observation - I observed that my hand-drawing ability is very inadequate. When designing lettering using brush tool, I have been unable to draw lines to my satisfaction, and many times the lines drawn are crooked. I finally gave up using the brush tool and used the pen tool instead to be able to draw a font that I was more satisfied with, but I couldn't do a smoother lettering. I think the brush tool would be more suitable for lettering, so I need to improve this aspect, I think I need to practice drawing more to make myself proficient and stable with the brush tool.

Findings - I have found that using the right elements with the text makes the message easier for others to understand. Appropriate graphic elements and colors can emphasize the message and atmosphere of the text. Therefore, the choice of graphic elements and colors must be carefully considered to match the message to be conveyed.

Definition of Caligraphy:
Calligraphy is flawless, gorgeous handwriting. Calligraphers use muscle memory to perfect their style after many years of practice. So that the next time they gets commissioned to create a calligraphy, for example a wedding invitation, they can perfectly write all the copy on the first try. Although hand lettering often imitates calligraphy, the process behind the two is very different.

Definition of Hand Lettering:
Hand lettering is the art of drawing letters and can take on many shapes and sizes, from traditional-looking letters to intricate, detailed and not-so-obvious looking ones. This can be done in any style, on any material, with any media. Even though there are no rules in hand lettering, there are still guidelines that need to take into consideration when doing a hand lettering.

Script and Brush Lettering:
Script and brush lettering refers to letterforms that are connected to each other. This can be very formal looking and elegant, playful or even super trashy. This style imitates calligraphy, but instead of drawing the letters with a single movement of the hand like in calligraphy, draw the letters from many little pencil strokes to build that look. The most important rule to keep in mind is that a letter’s upstroke is always thin, and its downstroke is always thick. Up thin, down thick. Minimize the pressure of the pen on the ups, push and create more pressure on the downs. Up thin, down thick. Up thin, down thick.
